Top Games From E3 That I Would Totally Buy Part 3
My picks for the top 5 games of E3!

Of all the great games that were at E3, there were a select few that just a certain special something… |
These games might not be the most buzzworthy games of the show (actually most of them are), but they were the most fun to play as well as having represented the most exciting developments in gaming culture. Check out our picks for the top five games of E3 2008!
Lips

Everybody knows that the third most awesome thing to do whilst drinking copious amounts of alcohol, after fucking and fighting, is karaoke! So imagine my delight to hear that the newest contender in the karaoke game will reportedly allow you to use your own goddamn music collection! I don’t know how this is expected to work, or what the legal ramifications are, and I don’t care. My copy of Singstar only came with like 30 songs on it, only about 1/3rd of which were actually fun to sing. I own like 30 bajillion CDs, so if Lips delivers on it’s promise, it’s destined to become the number one party game in my household without cluttering up my living room with plastic drum sets and other such bullcrap.
Alpha Protocol

If KOTOR, The Bourne Conspiracy, Syphon Filter and James Bond all mated together in some twisted circle jerk that resulted in the world’s most badass espionage action RPG, Alpha Protocol is what we would end up with. This game offers up tough choices that can affect the course of your game with alarming frequency. You have to think fast at all times, as you cannot repeat conversations or events. Alpha Protocol is the first truly immersive spy simulator that brings it al together, the double agents, the weapons contractors, the safe houses, the weapons and gadgets, the women, the smooth talking and the gunplay. If truly becoming immersed in your character is in any way appealing to you (but you’ve been turned off by all the fantasy and space opera crap offered up by this genre), than Alpha Protocol is your chance to get in on the game.
Resident Evil 5

Resident Evil 4 was undoubtedly one of the best games of all time. The question this posed to the developers at Capcom was, “How do we make it better?” Resident Evil 5 is the answer to that question. In my play test of RE5, I was running across rooftops, climbing ladders, jumping through windows, swapping items and weapons with my partner (!), taking on hordes (I’m talking like over 100 it felt like) of enemies, one of which was a brute that was bastard hard to take down, and actually using my knife in combat, I shit you not. RE5 is faster, better looking by far, and more intense than it’s predecessors by a landslide. The AI partner actually helped me rather than hindered me, a first for the series. The controls were great, similar to RE4 but I am told that they are considering a whole new control scheme to help the player keep up with the faster and more panic-driven action elements of the sequel. If you are not super PUMPED for this game than there is something wrong with you, man.
Mirror’s Edge

Amazing that it took this long for someone to develop a proper action/adventure game from a first person perspective that doesn’t necessarily involve shooting. You play as a delivery person of sorts named Faith that traverses the environment like a parkour free-runner, moving expertly over, under and through any obstacle that stands in your way. The previews of this game look about as close to a true “virtual reality” experience as we are likely to get in this generation, and if it doesn’t end up making everybody that plays it motion-sick, may be the torch-bearer of a whole new stable of fast paced, 1st person adventure games to come.
Fallout 3

This game is so awesome that I had to be told like 13 times that my time was up for my play test. Fallout 3 combines the best parts of a shooter and an RPG, in a world that is so fully developed that it sets a new standard for depth in gaming. The characters have real personality, the enemies are widely varied, and the world is rich with things to explore and discover entirely at your own pace. Best of all is the Vault-tec Assisted Targeting System, or VATS for short, that allows you to stop time and target specific parts of your enemy’s anatomy. This allows you to set up your attacks to target your enemy’s weak points in a methodical fashion, causing actual real time reactions in the character models. In my game I was able to disarm opponents by shooting the gun out of their hands, disable others by shooting the arm that they shoot with, clip the wings off a giant insect, decapitate raiders with perfectly placed headshots and send am airborne robot attack drone crashing to the earth by shooting it’s antenna off. Awesome, addicting, and unquestionably the best game of the entire show this year
